Trip in Transylvania (1 September 2011)

Cluj-Napoca – Alba-Iulia – Sibiu – Cluj-Napoca

A trip in the very heart of Transylvania, aiming to visit two medieval towns: Alba-Iulia and Sibiu (the later – having been the 2007 Culture Capital of Europe). Estimated cost: 25 EURO/person, including transport, lunch and dinner, entrance fees to different tourist attractions (a slight increase/decrease of this cost might be announced later). The detailed program is presented below:

8.30 a.m – departure from Cluj (ECONOMICA dorms, Gheorghieni, Cluj-Napoca)

Cluj-Napoca – Alba Iulia = 100 km (approx. 1 hour and 30 min.).

10.00 a.m. – arrival in Alba-Iulia

Parking: near the Reunification Cathedral

Visiting time: approx. 2 hours and 15 min

Tourist attractions:

  • The Reunification Cathedral (approx. 20 min).
  • The Walls of the Bastion Fort with the cell where the three medieval heroes, Horea, Cloşca and Crişan, were incarcerated (approx. 30 min.).
  • The Change of guards Ceremony (daily around lunch time) – (approx. 20 min.).
  • The Union Museum (built in 1851-1853). Now in the Babilon Building since 1968, with military destination (approx. 45-60 min.).

12.15 PM – departure from Alba-Iulia

Alba-Iulia – Miercurea Sibiului = 35 km (approx. 35 min.).

01.00 PM – 03.00 PM – lunch

Miercurea Băi Restaurant (inside city) or The Restaurant of Comfort Hotel (between Miercurea Sibiului and Apoldu de Sus). Both restaurants offer Romanian and international food. Recommendation: Pork with Beans!!!

03.00 PM – departure to Sibiu

Miercurea Sibiului – Sibiu = 34 km (approx. 35 min.)

03.35 PM – Sibiu

Parking: near the Village Museum

Visiting time: 2 hours and 15 min.

Tourist attractions:

  • Astra Popular Civilization Museum outside (The Village Museum, ZOO, restaurant etc.). Program: 10:00 AM – 8:00 PM; inside the Dumbrava Forest, the route Sibiu-Păltiniş.
  • Brukental Museum, program 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM (built in 1778-1788) with 1090 pieces by Dutch, Flemish, German and Austrian artisans, most valuable collections of Baroque paintings of Central and Eastern Europe, a library with over 100.000 volumes;
  • in pedestrian area: The Catholic Church (in baroque style, XVIII century), Towers of Advice, The Ursuline Church, Stairs of Aurarilor, Dulgherilor, Archebuzierilor, Olarilor, Gros, Pulberăriei, Pielarilor, Ursulinelor Church (ex-church to the Dominican Monastery, built in the 1474 year), Franciscan Church (ex-Monastery of the Nuns, it has a linden wood statue, Madonna with her child, made in the XV century), The Reformed Church (built in 1783-1786, it has an pulpit canopy of gilded motifs hanging and garlands of roses), The Pharmacy Museum (was opened in 1494, the first pharmacy in our country, where the German doctor Christian Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann worked, the inventor of homeopathy), The Arts House (8 architectural elements, built in the XV century), The Bridge of lies (the oldest metal bridge from Romania, name that reminds exaggerated lies of slum women which exposed their laundry on the bridge), The History Museum (in the Old Hall Town building, which it has a bell tower) etc.

05.30 p.m. – departure from Sibiu

Sibiu – Alba-Iulia = 78 km (approx. 1 hour and 20 min.).

07.00 – 09.00 p.m. – dinner

The Bleumarin Motel (between Alba-Iulia and Aiud).

09.00 p.m. – departure to Cluj-Napoca

Motel Bleumarin – Cluj-Napoca = 88 km (approx. 1 hour and 40 min.).

10.40 p.m. – arrival to Cluj-Napoca
